Invloed industrie bij aanpak 'loze pandemie' onderzocht

Het aanvankelijke enthousiasme over de voortvarende aanpak van de Mexicaanse griep door viroloog Ab Osterhaus en minister Ab Klink heeft plaatsgemaakt voor kritiek. Ook buiten Nederland rijst de vraag of verstandig is gehandeld bij het grootschalig aankopen van vaccins. De Raad van Europa begon dinsdag met een onderzoek naar het antwoord op die vraag. Tweede-Kamerlid Pieter Omtzigt is de vice-voorzitter van de commissie die het onderzoek uitvoert en zegt in een radio-uitzending van de NOS: 'Een aantal leden van de Raad van Europa heeft buitengewoon harde kritiek op de Wereld Gezondheidsorganisatie en vraagt zich hardop af of medicijnfabrikanten te veel invloed gehad hebben bij dit besluit'.

'De commissie benoemde [...] een speciale rapporteur om de banden tussen WHO en farmacie te onderzoeken. Volgens kritische europarlementariërs is belangenverstrengeling de enige logische verklaring voor het grootscheepse alarm', schrijft Tubantia woensdag. Overheden hebben voor 12 miljard euro aan anti-griepmedicijnen ingeslagen, schrijft de krant.

'Loze pandemie'
'De Duitse parlementsvoorzitter van de raad [van Europa, de SPD'er en arts], Wolfgang Wodarg, noemt het uitroepen van de 'loze pandemie' één van de grootste medische schandalen van deze eeuw', schrijft De Telegraaf eerder deze maand in aanloop naar het onderzoek en een spoeddebat. 'De tekst van een ontwerpresolutie die tijdens het aanstaande spoeddebat waarschijnlijk de steun krijgt van veruit de meeste van de 47 landen, ademt eveneens die uiterst kritische geest. De resolutie stelt onder meer dat miljoenen gezonde mensen wereldwijd nodeloos zijn blootgesteld aan onbekende neveneffecten van griepvaccins die onvoldoende waren getest'.

WHO wijzigt definitie pandemie
Pieter Omtzicht zegt in de radio-uitzending: 'Een van de zaken die bijvoorbeeld veranderd is, is de definitie van een pandemie'. Daardoor wordt niveau 6 "heel veel sneller" bereikt. In de uitzending is ook Ab Osterhaus. Hij reageert op Omtzicht door te zeggen dat de definitie 'al langer' vast lag. Wat hij daarmee bedoelt, is onduidelijk, omdat de definitie pas afgelopen mei is gewijzigd. Ook een andere opmerking in de pers roept vraagtekens op. 'Volgens Luc Hessel van de Europese vereniging die het opneemt voor de vaccinfabricanten, hebben de laboratoria [...] "met de nieuwste technieken [...] rigoureuze tests uitgevoerd".' Uit deel vijf van deze serie van DeepJournal over de Mexicaanse griep bleek al dat het Mexicaanse-griepvaccin wordt getest in de praktijk. En deel zes kopt: Prikadvies zwangeren gebaseerd op 'vrijwel geen wetenschappelijke gegevens'.

Meerdere onderzoeken
De resultaten van de hoorzitting van de Raad van Europa 'are expected to be announced January 29 and will likely be followed by an in-depth study and recommendations to European governments', schrijft Truthout. De hoorzitting 'is the latest in a series of investigations into the WHO's propriety, which also includes a 2009 Danish Parliamentary inspection of links between WHO expert, Albert Osterhaus, and makers of the swine flu drugs. Russian lawmaker Igor Barinov has also started an inquiry into the WHO's ties to H1N1 drug makers'. De WHO probeert de schade nu alvast te beperken met een verklaring 'on allegations of conflict of interest and 'fake' pandemic'.

Onvrede binnen WHO
Toch is er ook binnen de WHO onvrede. Dr. Ulrich Keil, director of the WHO's Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology, laat dat dinsdag merken tijdens de hoorzitting van de Raad van Europa. Truthout schrijft: 'Keil hammered his own organization and WHO flu chief, Dr. Keiji Fukuda, for "producing angst campaigns." "With SARS, with avian flu, always the predictions are wrong ... Why don't we learn from history?" Keil asked. "It [swine flu] produced a lot of turmoil in the pubic and was completely exaggerated in contrast with all the really important matters we have to deal with in public health."'

Ab Osterhaus
Ook epidemioloog Tom Jefferson heeft soortgelijke vragen, die net als bij Keil de persoon van Ab Osterhaus in gedachten roepen: 'For example, what happened with the bird flu, which was supposed to kill us all? Nothing. But that doesn't stop these people from always making their predictions. Sometimes you get the feeling that there is a whole industry almost waiting for a pandemic to occur', zegt hij in Der Spiegel.
Een andere opmerking van Jefferson doet denken aan de uitzending van Tegenlicht over Osterhaus: 'The WHO and public health officials, virologists and the pharmaceutical companies. They've built this machine around the impending pandemic. And there's a lot of money involved, and influence, and careers, and entire institutions!' In de uitzending van Tegenlicht was te proeven hoe het enthousiasme van Osterhaus over zijn werk overloopt in enthousiame over de verspreiding van het virus en het positieve effect ervan op zijn invloed en carrière. Een tekenende scène uit de uitzending werd, enigszins uit zijn verband, getoond in De Wereld Draait Door.

WHO plays dubious role in Swine flu pandemic

On June 11, 2009 Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the WHO, declared the Swine Flu a pandemic. The declaration of phase six means that emergency procedures are put into motion which bypass established systems designed to safeguard the public health. The result of this is described in part six of this DeepJournal series on the Swine Flu. Conclusion: the vaccine is being tested while being administered to the public. The definition of what a pandemic is, is therefore of great import.

Government flu advisors not independent

Ab Osterhaus is playing an important role in the affair surrounding the Swine Flu. Through his influence and conflicts of interest, he personifies a system that is now being subjected to investigation from all directions. Soon the investigators will undoubtedly stumble upon SAGE, the strategic advisory group of vaccine and immunity experts for the World Health Organization, or WHO. Osterhaus turns up here as well - he is an expert with SAGE.

Influence of industry on 'fake pandemic' investigated

Also beyond The Netherlands the question is being raised over whether the large-scale acquisition of vaccines made sense. The Council of Europe began an investigation into this question last Tuesday. 'A number of members of the Council of Europe have expressed exceptionally harsh criticism of the World Health Organization and are asking themselves out loud whether drug manufacturers had too much influence in this decision'.
