Griepadviseurs overheden niet onafhankelijk

Ab Osterhaus speelt een belangrijke rol in de affaire rond de Mexicaanse griep. Door zijn invloed en belangenverstrengelingen verpersoonlijkt hij een systeem dat nu aan alle kanten aan onderzoek wordt onderworpen. Ongetwijfeld zullen de onderzoekers binnenkort stuiten op SAGE, de strategische adviesgroep van vaccin- en immuunexperts voor de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie, de WHO. Ook hier duikt Osterhaus weer op. Hij is expert bij SAGE.

Ab Osterhaus 02 [jpg] SAGE is in 1999 opgericht om de directeur-generaal van de WHO (nu Margaret Chan) van advies te voorzien, 'to provide guidance'. SAGE is de belangrijkste organisatie op dit gebied en adviseert over vijf onderwerpen, waaronder mazelen, polio en kinkhoest. Maar ook over twee andere: vogelgriep en de Mexicaanse griep. Ab Osterhaus is expert voor de twee commissies die over deze vormen van griep adviseren. Bij beide commissies tekent de WHO aan: 'Only two members reported any interests'. Een van de twee is Osterhaus, met bij beide adviesgroepen de langste lijst met belangen.

Toch blijkt bij nadere bestudering dat ook andere betrokkenen banden hebben met de industrie. Enkele voorbeelden:

Een van de adviseurs van SAGE is Roy Anderson. Ruim anderhalve maand nadat Chan de Mexicaanse griep tot pandemie verklaart, verlaat hij SAGE nadat blijkt dat hij op de loonlijst staat van GlaxoSmithKline, een van de fabrikanten van het vaccin tegen de Mexicaanse griep.

Dr. Frederick Hayden wordt door SAGE als expert geraadpleegd. Als gevolg van een een WOB-verzoek van de Deense krant Information wordt duidelijk [vertaling] dat hij tevens geld heeft ontvangen van de farmaceutische fabrikanten Roche en GSK.

Information schrijft ook over de Finse professor Eskola, lid van SAGE. Eskola is de directeur van een instituut dat onderzoek doet naar vaccins. Zijn instituut heeft in 2009 ruim zes miljoen euro ontvangen van GlaxoSmithKline, schrijven de Deense journalisten Louise Voller en Kristian Villesen. Op aanraden van Eskola's instituut en de WHO schaft de Finse overheid GSK's Pandemrix aan tegen de Mexicaanse griep. Dr. Arnold Monto is expert voor SAGE. Voor de WHO was hij voorzitter van een bijeenkomst in augustus waarin experts werden geconsulteerd over H1N1. Twee jaar eerder was hij ook voorzitter bij een WHO-bijeenkomst, over de mogelijkheid van een grieppandemie. Maar Monto is ook een betaalde adviseur voor bijvoorbeeld GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Novartis en Baxter.

Door de advisering van de directeur-generaal van de WHO heeft SAGE veel invloed. Die invloed zal alleen maar toenemen, blijkt uit toekomstplannen voor 2015: 'SAGE acts as the technical advisory group on immunisation for WHO, UNICEF and GAVI. - SAGE overarches all WHO’s immunisation committees'.

WHO plays dubious role in Swine flu pandemic

On June 11, 2009 Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the WHO, declared the Swine Flu a pandemic. The declaration of phase six means that emergency procedures are put into motion which bypass established systems designed to safeguard the public health. The result of this is described in part six of this DeepJournal series on the Swine Flu. Conclusion: the vaccine is being tested while being administered to the public. The definition of what a pandemic is, is therefore of great import.

Government flu advisors not independent

Ab Osterhaus is playing an important role in the affair surrounding the Swine Flu. Through his influence and conflicts of interest, he personifies a system that is now being subjected to investigation from all directions. Soon the investigators will undoubtedly stumble upon SAGE, the strategic advisory group of vaccine and immunity experts for the World Health Organization, or WHO. Osterhaus turns up here as well - he is an expert with SAGE.

Influence of industry on 'fake pandemic' investigated

Also beyond The Netherlands the question is being raised over whether the large-scale acquisition of vaccines made sense. The Council of Europe began an investigation into this question last Tuesday. 'A number of members of the Council of Europe have expressed exceptionally harsh criticism of the World Health Organization and are asking themselves out loud whether drug manufacturers had too much influence in this decision'.

The Netherlands has an ongoing contract with Solvay Pharmaceuticals for the making of vaccines without additives. Then Dutch Health Minister Klink severs - with all of its accompanying financial consequences - the contract with Solvay. He signs new, secretive contracts with GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, companies that make vaccines with additives - the so-called adjuvants. In The Netherlands everyone is receiving the same vaccine containing adjuvants - whether they are young or old, pregnant or not. What happened that caused Klink to make this decision?

Even women 13 weeks pregnant are receiving this vaccine. In arriving at his decision, Dutch Health Minister Klink sought advice from the Health Council of The Netherlands. But he didn't get this advice. And yet he still went ahead and made a decision. Who advised him on this?
