Journalisten zijn soms net mensen

Zo nu en dan wordt er een scheve schaats gereden in de journalistiek. Zo zijn er bijvoorbeeld problemen bij de verslaggeving over 11 september, de aanloop naar de Irakoorlog en de verslaggeving over de Oorlog tegen de Terreur. Maar ook op een minder ernstig niveau gaat het niet altijd goed. Enkele voorbeelden.

Manipuleerde RTL geluid demonstratie tegen Zorreguieta bij doop prinses Ariane? - Bekijk de video en de foto is de kop boven een artikel dat DeepJournal gisteren publiceerde. Stan van Houcke schrijft hierover: 'Ik kan mij nog goed de tijd van Ulbricht herinneren. De tijd dat op de Oostduitse televisie deze communistische apparatsjik zijn volk minzaam toewuifde. Dat waren nog eens tijden. De communistische massamedia deden er ook aan mee, want anders was het Ulbricht niet gelukt de boel zolang te flessen. Dus elke keer dat de baas in beeld verscheen juichte het volk en scheen de zon. Iedereen hield van hem, niemand riep ooit boe of bah. Men keek wel uit. Die aanpak leek zo succesvol dat de westerse commerciele massamedia deze aanpak al snel overnam. Vooral op de Amerikaanse televisie zie je nooit maar dan ook nooit een dissident, op de commerciele radio hoor je nooit een dissidente stem. Daar schijnt altijd de zon en worden dissidente geluiden weggefilterd. Ik kreeg vandaag een bericht van Daan, waarin ik tot mijn grote schrik las dat ook hier in de polder nu het tijdperk Ulbricht is aangebroken. Leest u nu zelf: Manipuleerde RTL geluid demonstratie tegen Zorreguieta bij doop prinses Ariane?'

Er zijn wel vaker vraagtekens te plaatsen in de berichtgeving door de media.

Op 23 september brengt Prison Planet ten onrechte een spectaculair artikel. De email die ik de dag erna aan Prison Planet stuurde, bleef onbeantwoord: 'Your top- article CNN: The war with Iran has begun is last years news.'

Op 7 oktober kopt de Sunday Herald: UK 2017: under surveillance. Ook deze email van de volgende dag bleef onbeantwoord:
'Dear Sir,

Looking at the date line it seems like you published your article today (Sunday, October 7, 2007). The reactions to your article are from today (and yesterday) too. But the report [PDF] you refer to seems to be from 2006, including the 'surveillance society' quote from Thomas. And another thing, the number 2017 does not show up in the data base of the Surveillance Studies Network .
Am I mistaken, is something else not right?

It appears the date line changes as the days change, so the date line might not be connected to the article. But I'm not sure the people who replied to your article know that too. Was your article written this month?'

Kirstie Ball van het Surveillance Studies Network die ik ook mailde om het verhaal te checken, reageerde per omgaande post:
'Dear Daan,

Thank you for your email. The report was published in November 2006, and the scenarios discussed in the report refer to 2016, not 2017 as stated in the article, so the article is incorrect. That article has been published now because last Friday, in Edinburgh, the Public Policy Network and the Scottish ICO held an event called �Surveillance in Scotland', in which the report featured, among other things. I don't know the journalist involved. The dateline I think refers to today's date. I imagine the article will be archived in a week or so.
I will contact the journalist and ask them to correct the piece. Perhaps you should too.'

Op 8 oktober kopt The Raw Story Secret Service shot at car of agent said protecting Ahmadinejad. Het artikel wordt door veel media overgenomen en staat tot op de dag van vandaag online bij The Raw Story. Het is gebaseerd op informatie van The Blotter. Daar staat een minder spectaculair verhaal: een agent zittend in de stoel van zijn auto heeft per ongeluk een schot gelost door zijn stoel en de bodem van zijn auto heen.
